Another example of a mistake with the oil wash application – The stencil decals remain soaked with the oil wash after the wash removal.
Mistake example
After the oil wash application, I wasn’t able to remove the wash from the stencil decals and they remain soaked with it… even though I applied the gloss clear coat of varnish before the oil wash. Really ugly looking and at the very end of the build. I’ve experienced a mild nervous breakdown.
So, what actually happened?
Due to my eyesight issues, it appears that I left some parts of the model with not thick enough coat of clear gloss varnish that is mandatory before the oil wash application… thus, the oil thinner penetrated the thin varnish coat and soaked the decal film.
Compromise solution
It was irreparable unless you are ready to sand down everything and start from the beginning. Since that was out of the question, I’ve tried to just soften the problem and applied a few thin coats of a filter (diluted paint). Here’s the result
It wasn’t competition good, but it was good enough for my shelf.
What I have learned
Always apply several coats of varnish before you start with the oil wash, and of course, be sure to cover everything and leave enough time for the varnish to cure properly (like I already mentioned in the epsiode 02)
